Chinese ABS 275 2026: CNPC Jilin, Tianjin Dagu, LG Yongxing Comparison

May 5, 2026|Kantor Materials Research

Summary: ABS 275 is a heat-resistant ABS grade for appliance, automotive interior, and electronic enclosure applications. Chinese supply: CNPC Jilin (longest-established, naphtha-based, ~400,000 t/y expanding to 600,000+), Tianjin Dagu (large coastal producer), LG Yongxing (Korean-Chinese JV bringing LG Chem Starex technology, Ningbo). Note: Sinopec-SABIC SSTPC is PC + PE/PP, not ABS — SABIC ABS routes through SABIC's Asian distribution. Cost gap to Korean LG Chem Starex: $200-500/MT on commodity grades, narrower on FR or electroplating variants. For electroplating, specify dedicated EP-grade rather than general 275.

Same Material, Different Surface

A Vietnamese appliance manufacturer molding washing machine control panels switched from imported LG Chem ABS Starex to Chinese ABS 275 to reduce cost. The molded parts looked identical. Two months into production, a customer complaint surfaced: chrome plating was peeling on the decorative trim that had been molded from the same material lot.

The ABS 275 they sourced was a heat-resistant grade — adequate for the control panel housing, but not specifically tuned for the electroplating preprocess. The plating-grade ABS the customer needed was different — same chemistry family, different butadiene content distribution, different morphology specifically designed for chemical etching during chrome plating.

The grade designation matters. "ABS" is a polymer family. "ABS 275" is a heat-resistant general-purpose specification. "ABS plating-grade" is a different specification. Application matching, not just polymer matching, drives Chinese ABS sourcing decisions.

What Is ABS 275?

ABS is acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene — a thermoplastic terpolymer combining the chemical resistance of acrylonitrile, the impact resistance of polybutadiene rubber, and the rigidity and processability of styrene. The ratio of these three monomers, along with grafting chemistry and additives, creates the ABS grade family — covering general-purpose, high-impact, heat-resistant, FR, electroplating, transparent, glass-filled, and other variants.

The "275" designation refers to a heat-resistant variant — higher heat distortion temperature than general-purpose ABS, balanced with retained processability and impact strength.

The trade-off across grades: as heat resistance increases, processability and surface finish typically decrease. ABS 275 hits the medium balance for appliance and automotive interior applications.

Common Applications for ABS 275

Appliance components:

  • Washing machine control panels (heat from motor/water)
  • Microwave oven bezels and door frames (heat exposure during use)
  • Kitchen appliance housings (toaster, oven, mixer external parts away from heating elements)
  • Refrigerator interior components (door bins, shelving frames)

Automotive interior:

  • Center console panels
  • Dashboard sub-assemblies (non-Class A surface)
  • HVAC vent housings
  • Seat back trim and door pull components

Electronics:

  • Power supply housings
  • Network equipment enclosures
  • LED light fixture bodies (where ABS is acceptable; PC or PC/ABS often preferred for higher-end LED housings)

Consumer goods:

  • Tool bodies (where heat from extended motor use is a factor)
  • Outdoor equipment housings (where sun exposure raises surface temperature)

Chinese ABS 275 Producers

CNPC Jilin (吉林石化, Jilin)

China's longest-established ABS producer, dating to 1980s capacity. Naphtha-based via PetroChina's integrated chain.

  • Capacity: approximately 400,000 tons/year of ABS as of 2024, expanding to 600,000+ tons/year with the western expansion phased through 2025
  • Key grades: 0215A (general-purpose, comparable to ABS 707/727), 215 (general), heat-resistant variants in the 275-equivalent window, FR and electroplating-specific grades
  • Quality: consistent for commodity grades; specification-driven Tier 1 OEM applications often route through compounders for specific formulations
  • Export footprint: strong in SE Asia, Middle East, Indian subcontinent
  • Pricing: typically the volume baseline for Chinese ABS in export markets

Tianjin Dagu (天津大沽, Tianjin)

Major coastal ABS producer. Naphtha-based.

  • Capacity: large-scale, multiple lines
  • Key grades: general-purpose 215 series, heat-resistant variants in the 275 window, electroplating-grade EP series
  • Logistics advantage: Tianjin port access — established freight to SE Asia
  • Pricing: competitive with CNPC Jilin; sometimes priced $20-50/MT below depending on inventory position

LG Yongxing (LG永兴, Ningbo)

Korean-Chinese joint venture producing LG Chem Starex technology in China. Brings Korean specification standards and grade designations to Chinese-cost manufacturing.

  • Key grades: Starex GP100 (general), Starex VE0556 (heat-resistant — close to ABS 275 application window), Starex FR-series, electroplating-grade variants
  • Quality: Korean Starex specification with Chinese cost structure — typically tighter consistency than non-JV Chinese ABS
  • Customer base: appliance OEMs (LG, Samsung, Haier), automotive Tier 1s
  • Pricing: typically $100-200/MT above CNPC Jilin commodity, $200-400/MT below LG Korea direct

SABIC ABS in China (note on Sinopec-SABIC SSTPC)

The Sinopec-SABIC SSTPC joint venture in Tianjin produces polycarbonate, polyethylene, and polypropylene — but not ABS. SABIC's PC/ABS Cycoloy alloys are produced at separate SABIC facilities (Huizhou and planned Fujian sites). For Chinese-origin SABIC ABS, sourcing typically routes through SABIC's Asian distribution rather than a domestic JV.

Other Chinese ABS Producers

Lihuayi (利华益, Shandong) — large-scale ABS producer, growing export presence.

Remay (Guangdong) — KMI's Lane 2 specialty compounder also produces FR-rated and heat-resistant ABS variants alongside its broader engineering portfolio (PA6, PA66, PC, PC/ABS, PPS, PPA). For applications requiring UL Yellow Card filings on specific FR-ABS grades, dedicated electroplating-grade ABS for tight butadiene control, or OEM-validated custom formulations, Remay's compounder model fits where standard CNPC Jilin or Tianjin Dagu commodity ABS doesn't.

Shanghai Huayi (上海华谊) — Sinopec subsidiary, produces ABS alongside other styrenics.

Petrochina Lanzhou — limited ABS production within PetroChina's portfolio.

Multiple regional producers — Chinese ABS market has 20+ producers operating at 50,000-300,000 ton/year scale.

What to Specify on Your ABS 275 Purchase Order

A bare "ABS 275" leaves multiple parameters ambiguous. Your PO should include:

  1. Specific producer and grade designation — "CNPC Jilin 0215A heat-resistant variant" or "LG Yongxing Starex VE0556"
  2. Vicat softening minimum — ">=100°C per ASTM D1525 B/120"
  3. HDT requirement — ">=90°C at 1.8 MPa per ASTM D648"
  4. MFI tolerance — typically 10-15 ±2 for injection molding
  5. Color specification — "Natural" or specific color code with ΔE tolerance ≤2.0
  6. UL Yellow Card (if FR or safety required) — verify the specific grade is covered under the producer's UL filing
  7. FDA / GB 4806 (if food-contact, e.g., kitchen appliance internals) — plant-specific certification
  8. Surface finish requirement — gloss level, texture compatibility with mold
  9. COA before shipment — verify Vicat, HDT, MFI, and impact against spec

For electroplating applications, additionally specify:

  • "Electroplating-grade ABS" rather than general 275
  • Required butadiene content range (typically 18-22%)
  • Surface morphology compatibility with chrome plating bath

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ABS 275 used for?

ABS 275 is a heat-resistant ABS grade designed for applications where dimensional stability and impact resistance must be maintained at elevated temperatures. Primary applications: appliance housings (washing machine controls, microwave bezels, kitchen appliance components), automotive interior trim, electronic enclosures, and electroplating-grade parts where surface finish is critical. The 275 designation refers to the grade's positioning as a medium-impact heat-resistant variant — higher heat distortion than general-purpose ABS but with retained processability.

Which Chinese producers make ABS 275 for export?

CNPC Jilin (吉林石化) is the longest-established Chinese ABS producer with the 0215A series targeting the same application window as 275-grade ABS. Tianjin Dagu (天津大沽) is a major coastal producer with broad ABS portfolio. LG Yongxing (LG永兴, Korean-Chinese JV, Ningbo) brings LG Chem Starex technology to Chinese production — bridging Korean specification standards with Chinese cost structure. Sinopec-SABIC SSTPC JV (Tianjin) is primarily a PC, PE, and PP producer; ABS is not a confirmed SSTPC product line. Domestic Chinese ABS producers also include Lihuayi (利华益), Shanghai Huayi, and several mid-scale operators. CNPC Jilin and Tianjin Dagu dominate volume export to SE Asia; LG Yongxing dominates specification-driven appliance work.

What is the difference between ABS 275 and ABS 757K?

ABS 275 is a heat-resistant grade (Vicat softening point typically 100-105°C) designed for applications where the part may experience moderate elevated temperatures during use. ABS 757K is a high-flow grade with lower heat resistance but better processability for thin-wall injection molding — used for consumer electronics housings and complex molded parts. The choice depends on application: for kitchen appliances, microwave components, and automotive interior parts exposed to heat, choose 275-class; for consumer electronics housings with thin walls and complex geometry, 757K-class flows better. Some converters specify ABS 707-equivalent for electroplating applications where surface finish is critical.

What are LG Chem Starex equivalents in Chinese ABS?

LG Chem Starex is a broad ABS family with multiple grade designations covering general-purpose, high-impact, heat-resistant, electroplating, and FR variants. For LG Yongxing JV-produced ABS, direct Korean Starex equivalents are produced under the joint venture brand. For non-JV Chinese substitutes: CNPC Jilin 0215A maps closely to Starex GP100 (general-purpose), Tianjin Dagu MG29 to Starex VE0556 (heat-resistant), and various Chinese FR grades to Starex flame-retardant series. Cost gap to genuine LG Korea: typically $200-500/MT in favor of Chinese substitutes on commodity grades, narrower on specialty FR or electroplating variants.

What is heat-resistant ABS and when do I need it?

Heat-resistant ABS modifies the standard ABS formulation (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) by adjusting the styrene-acrylonitrile-butadiene ratio and incorporating heat stabilizers to raise the heat distortion temperature (HDT). Standard ABS has HDT of 70-85°C (1.8 MPa); heat-resistant variants like ABS 275 reach 90-105°C; high-heat ABS (sometimes called 'ABS 757H' or 'ABS 909') reaches 115-125°C. You need heat-resistant ABS when: the part operates near a heat source (oven controls, automotive interior near engine bay), undergoes paint/coating processes that bake at 80-100°C, or experiences sustained sun exposure (automotive interior). For room-temperature consumer electronics and toys, standard ABS is adequate.

Is ABS 275 suitable for electroplating?

ABS is the dominant polymer for chrome-plated decorative applications because of its surface acceptance for chemical etching during the plating preprocess. ABS 275, being a heat-resistant variant, is acceptable for electroplating but is not optimized for it — dedicated electroplating-grade ABS (often labeled 'ABS 707' or 'ABS EP-grade') has tighter butadiene content control and surface morphology specifically tuned for chrome plating bath compatibility. For electroplated bathroom fittings, automotive emblems, and decorative trim, specify ABS electroplating-grade rather than general 275. CNPC Jilin, Tianjin Dagu, and LG Yongxing all offer dedicated electroplating-grade ABS variants.

When should I choose ABS instead of PC/ABS alloy?

Pure ABS is cheaper, easier to process, and adequate for most consumer goods, appliance housings, and non-critical structural parts. PC/ABS alloy combines ABS's processability with polycarbonate's higher impact resistance and heat performance — choose alloy when the part requires: (1) higher impact at low temperatures (-40°C automotive), (2) higher continuous service temperature (90-110°C vs ABS's 70-85°C), (3) better dimensional stability under load, or (4) UL94 V0 flame retardancy with mechanical retention. Alloying adds 30-60% to cost. For most appliance and consumer applications where ABS 275 is being considered, pure ABS is cost-justified; PC/ABS earns the premium when the application demands the alloy's specific advantages.
